Twelve Books Worth Reading

We all have a little extra time right now, so where will you spend yours?

I love to read. I go through phases of devouring five books in a month, getting burned out, and then three months or so later, fly through five more books. I love to learn about people belief’s and views. I love to learn how people think and process the world. With that said, I do not agree with every ounce of theology or beliefs in these books. So, read them and compare them to truth. If you find it interesting, keep reading and take away what you do and leave the rest behind. These have all helped me in different ways and hope at least one of them sparks an interest in you!

Tip: If you look at my “Money Saving and Earning Apps You Need Now,” it has a link to Honey, a coupon web extension. This extension will show if there are any coupons or discounts available for any of these books!

Love Works

I’m usually not one to pick up a business book but my roommate recommended it, so I gave it a shot and ended up really enjoying reading it. Joel Manby wrote about a business model based on love. I know it sounds cheesy at first but a few of the stories brought tears to my eyes. Joel starred on “Undercover Bosses” and the viewers and producers were blown away by the employees Joel worked with that day. It was refreshing to read about corporation that truly loves their employees and employees that truly love the business they work for.

If you are looking to become a better leader, in any matter of life, I would highly recommend reading this book.

Beautiful Outlaw

This book brought the person of Jesus to life. It is so hard sometimes to see Jesus as a human. I’ve grown up in church, so it is easy for me to see Jesus as God incarnate, but it has been so hard for me to see His human characteristics. John Eldredge does a great job at pulling out characteristics that we read about throughout the Gospels (the books of Good News: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.) and helping form Him as a 3 dimensional person, rather than a 2 dimensional character.

If you are looking to know more about the character of Jesus, I would highly recommend this book.

Through Painted Deserts

Donald Miller is widely known for his book, “Blue Like Jazz.” After reading “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller, I bought and read most of his books. Through Painted Desserts is an adventurous book and travel in a van throughout the United States

The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog

This is an intense book about psychological trauma. During my internship at a children’s home, my supervisor recommended this book to have a better understanding of what some of the children had been through and why they respond certain ways. This book was very eye-opening. Psychology is one of my favorite subjects to learn about, so I found this book very intriguing. These are very hard and unimaginable stories to read.

If you are in the realm of at-risk children or trauma counseling, I would highly recommend this book.

Walk To Beautiful

This was another book that was recommended to me during my summer internship at the children’s home. Jimmy Wayne Barber had a crazy life. This book starts when his mom leaves him at a bus station in the middle of the night when he was thirteen years old. This is another eye-opening book of crazy stories people live through.

If you are looking for a captivating story and eye-opening story, I would recommend this book.

Stepping Heavenward

This is a book about a young and stubborn woman, and her journey on seeking God. My Sister-in-law gave this book to me back when I was high school and I have read it multiple times through. Elizabeth does a swell job at bringing the reader into the story and the characters mind.

If you are looking for a novel that is wholesome and edifying, I would recommend this book.

Captivating

This is the sister book to, “Wild at Heart” by John Eldregde. While reading this book, I felt like I was reading a journal about myself that I had never written. It revealed desires that the Lord had placed in me that I did not even know existed until I read the words written in this book.

If you are looking to better understand yourself as a woman or are trying to better understand a woman you love, I would highly recommend this book.

Present Over Perfect

I just read this book during quarantine. Shauna explains her life and how she has realized what actually matters in life, versus what we make ourselves believe matters. It revealed a lot of beliefs that I have about my life. This book also helped me take a step back to look at what matters and what I have made myself believe what matters.

If you are looking for a book to help you focus more on relationships and being present, over striving for something you are not, I would recommend this book.

Love Does

This is a book with various stories of how Bob Goff and his family love others. They go on many adventures together and share some of their favorite memories. I flew through this book.

If you are looking for a fun, joyful, and easy read, you should check out this book.

Everybody Always

This book is very similar to the previous book but it written by Bob Goff’s wife. This book is filled with heart-warming stories of people they have met over the years.

Another book if you are looking for a fun, joyful, and easy read.

Strong Women Soft Hearts

This book was recommended to me by a lady who was mentoring back in college. It is a wonderful book about how to place our trust and desires in the Lord without hardening our hearts. It shows what it means to be a strong christian woman who loves others well.

If you have noticed your heart has become hardened and inward focus, I would highly recommend this book.

Wait and See

This is one of my all time favorite books. Wendy points out that is does not matter what stage of life we are in, we are always anticipating what is to come. Whether we are waiting on having a child, a house, a dog, marriage, college, we are always waiting. She helps the reader to focus and enjoy the present because time is fleeting.

If you feel caught up in waiting for the next part of your life and are wanting to enjoy now, I would recommend this book.

Thank you for taking time to look through this list of books. There will be more blog posts about books to come, this is definitely not all-encompassing.
